Foxconn’s Hon Hai reports Q1 revenue drop
It News:
Foxconn’s Hon Hai accuracy Industry posted a 19.2 percent
year-over-year refuse in income for first district, with sale possible
affected by weak demand for Apple’s iPhone 5, according to an market
analyst. The Taiwanese agreement producer said on Wednesday its revenue for
the quarter was NT$809 billion (US$27
billion), although net profit was up 8.4 percent year-over-year, reaching NT$16.4 billion.
Hon Hai Precision Industry is the main manufacturing arm of Foxconn Technology Group, which is best known as a supplier to U.S. tech giant Apple. The partnership between the two companies has helped fuel Foxconn’s rapid growth in recent years, especially in China where it has over 1.2 million employees.
But in this year’s first quarter, sales of Apple’s iPhone 5 have been in decline, which was the main reason for the drop in Hon Hai’s revenue, said Arthur Liao, an analyst with Fubon Securities Investment Services Co. In addition, consumers are buying up Apple’s lower-cost iPad mini over the more profitable iPad, he said.
“I also believe (Hon Hai’s) second quarter will be worse than the first quarter,” Liao said. The popularity of Apple’s latest iPhone model is waning, and consumer demand will shift to competing smartphones from Samsung, HTC and Nokia in the second quarter, he added.
Analysts estimate that Apple’s business accounts for 40 to 50 percent of Foxconn’s revenue. But the Taiwanese company is losing some of Apple’s product orders to rival supplier Pegatron, which is offering aggressive pricing on manufacturing.
Apple is preparing to launch a lower-priced iPhone model in third quarter, according to Liao and his sources. But production of the device will solely go to Pegatron and not Hon Hai, he added. The budget iPhone will be priced between $300 and $350 without carrier subsidies, and feature a plastic casing.

Zaka Ashraf is PCB’s first selected chairman
News:
Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman, has been selected to a four-year term,
the first-ever selected present in that office. He was selected under
the new PCB organization, which in February replaced the system of
appointing the PCB chairman by the supporter of the board, the President
of Pakistan.
The PCB’s board of committee had its first meeting today in Islamabad
under the new establishment. The nomination committee interviewed the
two candidates – Ashraf and former Lahore Stock Exchange chairman Aftab
Ahmad Khan – recommended by the Patron and unanimously recommended
Ashraf for the chairman’s post.
Thereafter, the board of governors reassembled and unanimously endorsed the recommended nominee of the Patron and the nomination committee.
In 2011, the ICC required that its member boards become autonomous and free of interference from governments by June 2013. Removal of government interference had also been one of the Woolf report recommendations approved by the ICC. The new constitution was produced as a result of the ICC directive and was approved on February 13, vetted by the Ministry of Law on the suggestion of the PCB and ICC feedback. However, in November 2012, ICC said it was reviewing its stance against government involvement in the administration of cricket.

Injured Smith absent of Champions Trophy
South Africa’s Graeme Smith will miss the Champions Trophy, because of the flaring up of a long-term ankle injury that will need operation.
Smith have scan in London on Wednesday and Surrey announced that he
would go back home to South Africa instantly to suffer an operation.
South Africa are set to feature in the opening match of the Champions
Trophy, against India on June 6, in just over four weeks’ time.
Cricket South Africa confirmed in a release on Thursday morning that Smith will miss the tournament. “Graeme has been troubled by left ankle pain over the last few months and despite extensive treatment and physiotherapy, it has recently deteriorated significantly while playing for Surrey in England. Surgery will be required, and he has been advised to follow a rest and rehabilitation programme over the next four to six months,” team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee, was quoted as saying in the release. “This unfortunately rules him out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales and the Selectors will name a replacement in due course.

Mozilla's Firefox OS will also appear on high-end phones
"Sony is known for quality and user experience. So they are targeting for very very high (end). We are in joint discussions on the kind of device and what's the product," said Li Gong, Mozilla's senior vice president for mobile devices.
Mozilla's Firefox OS is among several
fledgling mobile operating systems all vying for a presence in today's
market dominated by Android and Apple's iOS. To start off, Firefox OS is
targeting entry-level smartphone users and the first handsets will
arrive in select markets in Europe and South America this July, Gong
said in an interview Wednesday on the sidelines of the Global Mobile
Internet Conference.Mozilla, however, is in talks with additional vendors on developing higher-end phones using the OS, Gong said "The low-end entry point devices are good point to enter the market. But that doesn't mean we can't scale up or we don't want to scale. We do want to scale up," he said. "But an ecosystem takes some time to build.
The initial industry support has Mozilla confident that its operating system can stand alongside Android and iOS as the third major operating system in the smartphone market.
"I can tell you there will be a third one (mobile OS) and it's going to be us." Gong said. "Why it's going to be us? It's because we are the only company that takes a pure approach. We are entirely open. Not only open source, but open process. No price, no nothing."
Google also markets Android as open source. But the behind-the-scenes development of the OS and its upcoming versions are still closed off to telecom operators and hardware manufacturers, according to Gong. These industry players can only make tweaks to Android once a new version is fully released.
"They may like it or not like it. But they have to take it," he said. "People like to see us because we are totally transparent. All the products, all the roadmaps, the delivery, feature sets, bugs, fixes, everything is open. Anybody can come in and see where it's headed.

Farhat looking to cement place
Imran Farhat, the Pakistani batsman, has been around
international cricket since 2001 but has never been a regular in his team. In
the last 12 years. He has only manage to play 53 ODIs at 32.45 and given the
number of his matches he has opened with as many as nine partners.
Farhat's career has often been overshadowed by the fact that his father-in-law is Mohammad Ilyas, a key figure in the PCB over the past decade. "This is the notion I want to clear," Farhat said on sidelines of the training camp at Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. "He Ilyas has his own status but I never took advantage of it. I would have been playing cricket for Pakistan even if we weren't associated. It is in front of everyone that whenever I make a comeback it is due to my domestic performance.
"I have been playing my own cricket and no one is there to help at the pitch where you are on your own. I have my own goals and have always been very committed to my game and I never discuss it with him. If I perform it's good and if I don't, I never worry. Cricket is my bread and butter, and I want to play cricket and kept myself busy with it. Playing international cricket is like a reward against performances in the domestic cricket. The only reason I am in the team at the moment is my performance as I have scored enough runs to win a place."
Farhat is in fluent form at the moment. He marked himself with a triple-century in domestic cricket earlier this year and was recalled to the Test squad for the South Africa tour and retained for the ODIs as well. Since than Farhat has been looking to cement a spot in the top three. "I am much more experienced now and can manage any position and ready to play at any order [between 1 and 3] the team management wants.
"I am more confident than ever and working extremely hard," Farhat said. "I just want to make as much contribution as possible for my team whenever I get selected. However, the snub from national team has never been a frustration for me

Microsoft extends revenue per search agreement with Yahoo
Microsoft
has complete a search revenue guarantee contract with Yahoo for one
more year, amid reports that the Internet company is trying to break its
10-year contract with Microsoft.
The Redmond, Washington, software company, has decided to extend the warranty for an additional one year starting April 1, 2013, but only in the U.S., Yahoo said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday. Microsoft had in 2011 agreed to extend the guarantee in the U.S. and Canada through March 2013.
Under a 2009
search agreement for which implementation began in Feb 2010, Microsoft
guaranteed Yahoo's profits per search on its properties for 18 months
after the transition of its paid search services to Microsoft's platform
in each market, to protect Yahoo from the impact of the transition. It
was part of a broader deal by which Yahoo moved its search backend to
Microsoft's Bing and its paid search services to Microsoft's platform.
The so-called RPS Guarantee was calculated based on the difference in revenue per search between the pre-transition and post-transition periods and certain other factors, as Yahoo transitioned its paid search to Microsoft platforms. "To date, there has been a gap in revenue per search between pre-transition and post-transition periods in most markets and Microsoft has been making payments under the RPS Guarantee to compensate for the difference," Yahoo said in the filing.
Yahoo said that in line with the 2009 agreement, it had completed the transition of its search to the Microsoft platform in all markets, and also transitioned paid search in several markets.

Google plans video subscription service on YouTube
Google plans to offer a video subscription service on YouTube, which
according to a newspaper report, the company may announce this week.
YouTube is “looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our creators with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer,” a YouTube spokesman said in an email on Monday.
There has been speculation previously that Google may launch a subscription service for premium content on YouTube, which is known mainly for advertisement-sponsored free content. The company has been offering some partners in select countries the opportunity to offer their content on rental. Viewers can pay to watch rental video, ad-free, for a designated time period, offered by YouTube on a revenue-sharing basis.
The new model to be offered by YouTube will apply to as many as 50 YouTube channels, and viewers will be charged US$1.99 a month, reported The Financial Times, citing people familiar with the pla
n. The company has nothing to ann
ounce at this time, the YouTube spokesman said.
A subscription service will put YouTube in competition with players like Netflix which offers ad-free streaming video for a subscription. Netflix users can watch unlimited TV shows and movies for a monthly subscription. It claims 36 million users over 40 countries on its website.

How hackers hack Facebook Account
Facebook is, undoubtedly, the most popular social networking website
with more than 500 million active users. Due to its popularity, many
hackers (or should I say crackers?) are actively involved in hacking
Facebook accounts of unsuspecting users. This article outlines the many
strategies that such hackers use to gain access to Facebook accounts of
hundreds of users each day and how you can stop them from hacking your
account.
I have always been puzzled by Facebook's
leniency in this matter. All a hacker needs to do is know your email
address and he will be displayed a confirmation showing your name even
if he enters the wrong password. How easily a hacker can then hack your
Facebook account if he 'guesses' your password (if you use a weak
password) or answers your security question! This is something I hope
Facebook improves on quickly. Until Facebook does so, here are some
tricks you can use to protect yourself from this vulnerability.

Battery tricks and tips for the HTC 8X
I have been using two HTC 8X HSPA+ phones for about 5 weeks now.
Here are tricks and tips to improve battery life.
Note: If you have installed the Portico update along with the firmware update, your battery life is generally speaking at least doubled.
Following problems are solved with Portico: High standby drain in Flight mode, is reduced to 1% for 6 hours. It also seems to be the
case that Email will no longer try to sync in WLAN when it switches off in lock-screen. You can Enable WLAN on in lock-screen.
GPS power drain has been reduced significantly, you may leave it on. Steps 23 and 24 can be skipped if you have the update on a new phone
that came with Portico like ie. the HTC 8S.
*** First you need the following aps. ***
a) 'Battery level for WP8' from "Golesh" (FREE DEMO) (Setup to show battery level in lock screen.)
a2) Alternatively 'Battery Status' from "Tomaz Wisniewski", if you can not purchase the above, or want an alternative.
b) ConnectivityShortcuts from "OU Dev." (FREE) (Setup to show 5 little tiles on start screen, WLAN, Bluetooth, Mobile Network, Location, Flight Mode) *(Thx to HG for finding this one, cause it is very good!)
c) Understand how to end "formerly opened apps". (Like this, keep back pushed, go into app, then use back until it exits that app, then that app is closed, repeat with all apps.)
c2) Skype: You may wish to close it that way... Note that in the Skype app, you click on your photo on the top right, there you can change your online status. Not sure if this also affects the app running in the background... so... take note until we get out of Beta Skype.
The Samsung Galaxy S3
Samsung's flagship Android phone comes packed with features that are part entertainment and part utility. Here are a few simple tips and tricks that will help to unlock their power even further for new buyers.
The Galaxy S III comes with a wide range of useful features that quickly drain battery life, from included Live Wallpapers to LTE connectivity and Bluetooth capabilities.Turning off Android's Live Wallpapers feature, disabling LTE in favor of a 3G connection, and turning off Bluetooth except when actively in use, can increase battery life by as much as a third.
Conserve Battery Life
Limit Data Usage
By navigating to the data and network settings area of Android on the Galaxy S III, recent buyers can actually set a limit for data on the mobile network. This is the single best way to prevent overage charges from a mobile service operator, and it's a feature that can't be found on iOS and BlackBerry devices.
